Victoria Slashes the Cost of Commuting with Free and Half-Price Public Transport

The Victorian Government has unveiled a major cost-of-living relief package aimed at easing financial pressure on households by reducing commuting expenses across the state.

Under the new initiative, free public transport will be extended until 31 May, giving Victorians temporary relief from daily travel costs. Following that, from 1 June onward, commuters will benefit from 50% off public transport fares for the remainder of the year.

The move applies across metropolitan trains, trams, and buses, as well as regional public transport services, providing broad support for workers, students, and families facing rising living expenses.

Government officials say the decision is part of a wider effort to reduce household pressure while ensuring people can continue accessing jobs, education, healthcare, and other essential services without added financial strain.

The initiative is expected to save regular commuters hundreds of dollars over the coming months, especially for those relying on daily transport for work and study.

Premier Jacinta Allan said the government understands the financial challenges many families are facing and that lowering transport costs is one practical way to provide immediate support.

The announcement has been welcomed by many residents who see transport affordability as a key issue during ongoing cost-of-living pressures across Victoria.
